About This Place

Located in the heart of Gardena, CA, Kotohira Restaurant offers an authentic taste of Japan with a special focus on udon noodles that will delight both casual diners and Japanese cuisine aficionados alike. This cozy eatery brings traditional flavors to life with dishes crafted from quality ingredients and a genuine passion for Japanese culinary art.

The menu at Kotohira is a celebration of comforting and richly flavored specialties. Signature dishes like Kakuni Udon—featuring delectably tender, slow-braised pork belly atop perfectly chewy udon noodles in a savory broth—invite you to experience a harmony of textures and umami depth. For those exploring combination sets, the Kotohira Set with its golden assortment of crispy tempura paired with soothing udon offers a satisfying balance of crunchy and slurp-worthy delights, all for under $21. The Spam Omusubi Set cleverly marries the beloved island treat of Spam and rice wrapped in seaweed with the warmth of a hearty tanuki udon broth, creating an unforgettably nostalgic yet fresh taste.

Appetizers here are no less enticing. The Agedashi Tofu brings a silky softness contrasted with the gentle crisp of its tempura batter, bathing perfectly in a dashi-based sauce that dances on the palate. Takoyaki—those golden, pillowy octopus pancake balls—burst with delightful seafood flavor and a pleasing chew, making it easy to see why customers rave about this classic street food favorite. The Age Mochi, with its uniquely chewy bite and subtle ginger undertones, is a must-try for those eager to explore traditional textures that surprise and satisfy.

The dining atmosphere complements the food's authenticity perfectly. Stepping inside Kotohira is like a brief journey back to Japan—with warm, inviting decor, a well-thought-out layout that respects your personal space, and friendly staff whose attentiveness enhances rather than disrupts the dining experience. Reviewers frequently note the relaxed pacing and welcoming service, making every visit feel personal and genuine.

Whether you're seeking a comforting bowl of Spicy Pork Udon, a hearty Mini Katsudon Combination bursting with savory pork cutlet, eggs, and onions, or simply want to unwind with a chilled draught beer alongside savory Chicken KaraAge, Kotohira delivers on every level. Customer feedback highlights not only the rich, well-balanced flavors but also the highly reasonable pricing and generous portions that uphold value without sacrificing quality.

In summary, Kotohira Restaurant is a standout choice for those craving authentic Japanese udon and classic dishes in a relaxed yet authentic environment. Its thoughtful menu variety, expert preparation, and heartfelt service make it a treasured gem in Gardena’s dining scene—one that invites you to savor Japan’s culinary comforts one bowl at a time.

Solid udon spot with great Japanese dishes. Enjoyed the appetizers as well such as the agedashi tofu and takoyaki. We had the salmon and udon set as well as the katsudon and udon set. All of it was great and prices were reasonable for the quality and amount of food. The service was very friendly and came out at great times throughout the service. Place had a good spacing for seating. We ate around 2pm so we had basically the place to ourselves. Definitely worth making it out here.

Had a really great first time experience today! always searching for places to go whenever I'm in Torrance, portion sizes are perfect and personally I really like the sets cause you get more variety with the meal, really recommend the Age Mochi if you like unique textures and ginger tastes. Service was all over amazing, didn't wait long for our food at our server was very helpful and friendly about recommendations, for the Inari Sushi set and it didn't disappointm Definitely coming back here again.

I had the mini Katsudon combo (bottom) and my boyfriend had the Nikuyasai Soba (top) and as our first time here we were very impressed! Everything had so much flavor, our waiter was very attentive and kind. Definitely worth a try if you’re looking for an authentic experience. Would definitely come again

Amazing. The moment you step in you feel like you're back in Japan. The food was delicious! Prices are extremely reasonable too for Japanese food. Definitely a must if you're craving a Japanese bento, rice bowl, or udon!!

A good spot, but I got the sukiyakidon and they gave me like 5 pieces of meat with some tofu. Portion size could be a bit better, flavor was good. Also had beef curry and it’s alright for me. Good miso soup too

This restaurant is small and yet it has wooden stalls and booths which is nice. Parking is easy even on weekends if you are willing to park a little further away in the parking lot. Service is friendly, they bring you potato salad after you order. The potato salad is very smooth and creamy. The food portion is just right. Big eaters might find the portion underwhelming. This is a Japanese teishoku style restaurant, Japanese set menu with the option to substitute the udon, soba or seimen if you prefer.

Japanese homestyle bento bliss with a legacy! Hard to believe this cozy gem has been serving locals for 25 years. At the heart of the menu is their Sanuki Udon...a silky, springy noodle born in Japan’s historic Sanuki Province (now Kagawa Prefecture) on Shikoku Island. This isn’t just comfort food—it’s a taste of centuries-old tradition. Bonus points: the menu is loaded with photos so you know exactly what deliciousness you’re ordering. Food: 4/5 Generous portions, wallet-friendly pricing. I went for the Sukiyakidon which was hearty, flavorful, and satisfying. Ambience: 4/5 Old-school interior that feels like stepping into a Japanese home kitchen. Parking: 4/5 Can be busy depending on the time thanks to all the great eateries in the plaza

My buddy and I were in the mood for some Asian food. He particularly was in the mood for some noodles and we're glad we came here. The atmosphere was relaxing and there wasn't a long wait. The food was extremely good and supersedes my expectations (see photos below). All and all the experience was great and will certainly come back again.
